31 Nights of Halloween | Night 3 | Cynthia of The Three Witches

This month we take a look at some of the classic Horror Comics Hosts and Hostesses from DC Comics, Charlton Comics, and other companies.

With similar names and somewhat similar likenesses, it's easy to get the first two of The Three Witches confused, but there is no mistaking step-sister Cynthia, a "child of the late 1960s," who likes tales of E.S.P. and psychic phenomena... and hypnotism... of strange perversions of science (...SCIENCE!!!).  Cynthia, is hip, sexy, and blonde, often depicted with cat eyes.

Other hosts like Cain and Abel (see upcoming blog posts) sometimes crossed over into The Witching Hour title.  After The Witching Hour was cancelled, the Witches were folded into The Unexpected, appearing in Issues #203 and #205 (per wikipedia).  Years later, Neil Gaiman incorporated the characters into his Sandman universe as "The Kindly Ones," tapping into the long history of three witches in other tales and traditions.  As for the title they hosted, The Witching Hour returned as a 70-page special, produced in 2013 under the Vertigo imprint, perhaps to keep the trademark of the title up-to-date.

Comics and the Bible | The Seraph in "Echo of Evil!" | Super Friends #46

Image
The Seraph in "Echo of Evil" from  Super Friends  #46 Rivkah's cousin from Los Angeles is visiting Masada, a site in the Eastern Judean desert.  She is introduced to Chaim Lavon, who senses the clammy nearness of a malevolent being.    A caption box sets up the remainder of the story: "The influx of American visitors to Masada promised to be a joyful event, yet the place was haunted by the venomous presence of a demon... A ghostly butcher eager to slaughter 960 men, women, and children... Echo of Evil!" Despite the moment of unease, Chaim shares the history of Masada with cousin Wendy: "King Herod the Great turned Masada into a pleasure palace and formidible fort around 36 to 30 B.C.  100 years later, Rome sacked Jerusalem.  The last band of Jewish fighters fled into the desert to continue their battle for freedom... From Masada, they harried the Romans for two years....Then, Flavius Silva, with the Roman Tenth Legion, plus 10,000 colonial troops and s...

I Met... SANDY PLUNKETT!

I Met... Sandy Plunkett! Chillicothe Comics Center, a local non-profit, sponsored a special event at Wheatberry Books, our local bookstore.  They invited Sandy Plunkett, an Athens-based comic book artist, for a time of conversation and signings.  Although the name was unfamiliar, I learned that he had worked for both Marvel and DC, in addition to other projects throughout the years.  He penciled entries in the original Who's Who series for the Fiddler, a Golden-Age Flash villain, and Tim Trench, a private investigator who appeared in Wonder Woman.  So I took my 50-pound Who's Who Omnibus Vol. 1 for him to sign, which it graciously did.       But I also learned during his presentation that he drew the cover for Comic Book Creator #29, the first issue I worked on during my time with TwoMorrows Publishing.  Had I realized that, I would have brought that magazine for him to sign as well.  Next time!

Batman 1966 | Season 2 Episode Guide

Image
The second season of Batman  premiered Sept. 7, 1966, with the conclusion airing the following night, Sept. 8, 1966.  While most of the second season episodes followed this pattern, there are a few exceptions noted below.  E pisode synopses are from Amazon Prime Video.  Season and Episode numbers, based on Amazon's wonky numbering scheme, are given first.  Sequential numbering of episodes, as listed in The Official Batman Batbook by Joel Eisner, are listed second.   Bulleted notes are my own insights.   S201A E1 & E2 |  Season Two, Episodes 35 & 36 "Shoot a Crooked Arrow"   Archer and his gang have come to Gotham City, winning the public's favor with their Robin Hood-style deeds of stealing from the rich to give to the poor. "Walk the Straight and Narrow"  Batman and Robin escape their previous peril and are back in action seeking to foil the Archer and his gang.  The Archer is a villain created for the sho...
