Christmas in the Comics | Superman's Christmas Adventure
Superman's Christmas Adventure (1940)
Presumably the grandfather of all of DC's Christmas comics, this offering from the Golden Age features, Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Perry White, Superman, Santa Claus, reindeer and elves.
Ah... the Golden of Age of comics... Some observations about this one:
--"Xmas" is used often, sometimes when the word is spelled out as "Christmas" in the same sentence.
--Superman is a little creepy... He enters the home of wealthy Master James Daniels, wakes him up from his sleep, kidnaps him, and flies him up to the second story window to peep in on another boy, poor Billy Connelly.
--The bad guys are Dr. Grouch and Mr. Meany. That's what we call foreshadowing, kids.
--The elves defend Santa's workshop from the bad guys, poking Mr. Meany in the rear with a charged electric rod and shooting Dr. Grouch in the face with a pop gun.
--When Santa gives Dr. Grouch and Mr. Meany Christmas presents (the first presents they ever got), they have a complete change of heart and even apologize to snoopy girl reporter Lois Lane. "No apologies are necessary," she says. "If you've got the true Xmas spirit, I'm satisfied."
