31 Nights of Horror Hosts | Night 8 | Elvira
Plop! ended with the Nov./December 1976 issue. The House of Secrets ended with issue #154 dated Nov. 1978. The House of Mystery ended with issue #321 dated October 1983.
House of Mystery returned as Elvira's House of Mystery with a new #1, promoted as a Halloween 1985 issue. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, happened upon the House while fleeing from a blood-thirsty mob. By the end of the issue, Elvira told the House, "This place is my destiny... I think me an' this ol' house will be together... a long, long time!"
In Elvira's case, a long, long time was only 11 issues plus one special.
The title remained a horror anthology. The stories in a number of issues had a unifying theme, like "Wild West" or "Samurai." Issue #3 was published without the Comics Code Authority seal. Issue #6 was printed "sideways."
There was also a continuing storyline from issue to issue, namely "What happened to Cain, the former able caretaker?" No worries about spoilers here, because I haven't yet collected all of the back issues (they are on the pricey side) and digital versions exist of only the first two issues. Maybe next year?
